The Bob Bubb Memorial Award
2011
The Bob Bubb Memorial Award was established in 1985 to honor the memory of Bob Bubb. Bob was president of the Flying Dutchmen Ski club when he died suddenly from complications related to surgery. Up until his death, he was a driving force in this club, always striving to promote and advance the sport of skiing. Even after his death, his accomplishments continue to inspire us to advance the sport and the club.
Due to Bob's enthusiasm and dedication to the FDSC, it was decided that an award should be given annually, in his honor, to a recipient who exhibits similar enthusiasm and dedication to the sport and the club. Former award recipients have formed the foundation of the club as we know it today and many continue to work tirelessly to make sure it prospers.
According to the guidelines for the Bob Bubb Memorial Award, "The Bob Bubb Memorial Award should be presented to an individual who has been extensively active in the ski club for many years in all facets of the club and especially taken part in some skiing activity. The person should show leadership and initiative and be dedicated to the club."
A list of the former recipients reflects the recent evolution and history of the club. The former recipients are:

It wasn’t easy selecting just one club
member for this award. There are many people who have served on the board, run trips, dedicated a lot of
time to helping run events, and been very active in the club. But the committee
of past Bob Bubb award recipients and I narrowed it down to one
person.
Club Events this person helped to plan: Winter Carnivals, Spring Carnivals, Irish Wakes, Golf outings,
Wine Tours, Pub Crawls, Happy Hours, Talent Shows, Members Appreciation Picnic.
Club Events attended and active in: Ski trips, Workers Weekends, Club Picnics, Irish Wakes, Golf Outings,
Happy Hours, Pond Skimming, River Floats, EPSC races and carnival weekend
trips, NASTAR racing, Race Team Lodge weekends, Club Talent Shows, Every activity at the Wildwood weekends.
This person has also served on the
Board for a few terms as Social Director.
Trips run:
2006 Estrimont Canada - which included Orford, Sutton, Owls Head and Jay
Peak. I was on this trip . With the help of our trip leader, we created a
new sport called “Hotel Hall way
bowling”. We “recycled” our Guinness pounder beer cans by turning them into bowling pins and used
an apple covered in swix service tape as the ball. I had heard our recipient
was a good bowler and this person’s first shot was a strike!
2007 Sugarloaf Trip - nicknamed "the trip from hell" when the 12-hour bus
ride turned into 20 hours, but through it all, they did not run out of beer!
2008 Mt. Tremblant Trip. – Another well run trip! I was also on this trip
and with this person’s help, we pranked Dave Coffey and Sherry Vasquez by planting a walkie talkie in
their dresser drawer before they went to bed and then started calling Sherry’s name in the middle of the
night. Sherry was freaked out but Dave slept right through it.
2009 Mystery Trip to Snowshoe, WV. Our recipient impressed us again by winning the Jose Cuervo cardboard
box sled race, wearing a mystery trip cape and mask.
2010 Bolton Valley and Sugarbush trip – I wasn’t on this trip so if you were on
the trip, insert funny story here. Club Charity Events: This person has organized the Exeter Relay for Life
team for the last four years and the next one is this coming weekend. This
person is very dedicated to the cause and promotes it within the FDSC.
I’m sure there is much more that I have missed.
And while participating in and planning all these events and trips and charity work as well as serving on the
Board, she found time to be Mom to her two children Shaun and Lacey, grandmother to Lacey’s son Tyler, and
girlfriend to Jim Dolan. Please join me in congratulating our 2011 Bob Bubb award recipient, Patti
Spitler.

FDSC
History
The one thing we all share in our Club, besides a love for skiing, is a long history. The Flying Dutchmen Ski Club has been serving its members
since 1959. In that time there have been lots of memories recorded on film, paper and old ski equipment. As the Historian, I am always looking for new "collectables" for our Club. It's a way in which we can continue on into the future and be able to look back at our past. Please contact me if you have any issues of old Ski Trails, photos, films that I could borrow and have recorded onto VHS, or old ski equipment that you would like to contribute to the Club's historical collection. If you would have the item dated, that would be of great help. We'll probably be having a 45th anniversary dinner/party in two years, so now is a good time to get all your old FDSC memories together and help your Club be able to show off it's history for the big event!
Here's a starter: Remember the professionally made promo video from back in the late '80's or early '90's? There were several on VHS and even a professional sized master copy. Do you have a copy? Know someone who does? There is no copy of it in our current records. Hopefully, this will be a first step for new additions!
Please contact me by e-mail: rlsskis@epix.net
Thanks!
